  9.     The first utility I bought when I started using a PC in 1987 was
  10.     Central Point PC Tools. Then it was one 360K disk. Today, it comes
  11.     on either 3.5" or 5.25" high-density disks, which are compressed. It
  12.     also comes with 2 manuals with over 1300 pages, but also comes with
  13.     an accordian-style quick reference guide. PC Tools requires 8.5MB
  14.     hard disk space for a full installation, or 4.5MB for a minimum
  15.     install. The program is fully configurable, and you can select which
  16.     portions of the programs you wish to install.

  18.     PC Tools comes with the desktop, which allows you to copy, move,
  19.     delete and otherwise manipulate files and directories. It also has
  20.     the Desktop accessories that include: Notepads,Outlines, Databases,
  21.     Appointment Scheduler, Modem Telecommunications (using X,Z modem and
  22.     Kermit), E-Mail services (CompuServe, MCI Mail, EasyLink), Fax
  23.     communications (Connection CoProcessor, SatisFAXtion Board,
  24.     SpectaFax), Macro Editor, Clipboard, four Calculators, ASCII Table.

  27.     PC Tools V8.0 for DOS is the most comprehensive set of utilities
  28.     available. These include: Central Point Backup, Anti-Virus, Commute,
  29.     RAMBoost, DriveMap, PC-CACHE, task switching, DiskFix and many
  30.     others.

  32.     Some of the highlights and features of PC Tools V8.0 for DOS are:

  34.     BACKUP - The Tape Tools portion now allows you to reformat,
  35.     re-tension, or erase a tape at any time. Previously, you could only
  36.     format a tape when you did a backup. It also has support for several
  37.     tape controller cards including: Colorado FC-10 and TC-15, and I
  38.     have used it with the Iomega Fast controller, which is not listed in
  39.     the manual.

  41.     ANTI-VIRUS - detect over 1,400 viruses.
  42.  
  43.     SCREEN BLANKER - provides eight entertaining screen savers.
  44.  
  45.     DEFRAGMENTER (COMPRESS) - can now defragment high-capacity drives
  46.     with more than 10,000 files.

  48.     SCHEDULER - Have programs run whenever you want, even when you are
  49.     not there. You can run a virus check, DiskFix, and even backup your
  50.     system or network, when the office is closed.
  51.  
  52.     RAMBoost - This is a NEW feature. It is an upper-memory optimizer.
  53.     It will automatically load device drivers and TSRs in high memory,
  54.     freeing up more conventional memory for use by other programs. I
  55.     used QEMM. Of course you must disable QEMM to use RAMBoost. When I
  56.     ran RAMBoost in place of QEMM I had over 25K more available memory.

  58.     DriveMap - a remote device mapper, enables remote devices and
  59.     printers to appear as local resources on the network or on direct
  60.     connection via parallel or serial connectors. It gives mobile users
  61.     a great way to move files between the desktop and laptop computers.

  63.     Task Switcher - You can hot-key among several applications, and use
  64.     the PC Tools clipboard to cut-and-paste data between files. Remember
  65.     this is switching NOT multi-tasking. While all the applications are
  66.     up, they are NOT all running. Only the one you are working on is
  67.     active.

  69.     PC Tools meets the needs of the power user, network user, and even
  70.     the novice user. It is powerful yet flexible. Can do a lot, but is
  71.     user-friendly with pull-down menus and F-Keys options on the bottom
  72.     of the screen. It does NOT overwhelm the novice. It is a fully
  73.     integrated and intuitive desktop interface. While it is NOT for
  74.     Windows, it has a Windows-like interface. This means full
  75.     drag-and-drop capabilities throughout. Want to move files from C: to
  76.     E:? Just click on the files you want to move, and while holding the
  77.     Control key drag them to their new location. Without depressing the
  78.     Control key the files will only be moved.

  80.     In addition Tools lets you edit text files, hex-edit binary files,
  81.     encrypt and decrypt files even across a network. It also contains
  82.     Disk Information, System Information, DiskEditor. Directory
  83.     Maintenance shows you how much space each directory is using, and by
  84.     pressing F8 you can see all the files in that specific directory.
  85.     You do have the ability to rename, prune and graft, and other
  86.     directory functions.

  88.     PC Tools will work on compressed files. You can ZIP, and unZIP
  89.     files; and using the viewer, which can handle over 40 formats, you
  90.     can even see the files within a ZIP before you uncompress it. Tools
  91.     will scan your drive(s) and install programs you have on your system
  92.     in a menu. You can run any of these programs from PC Tools. If you
  93.     have other compression programs like PAK, LHA and so on, you can
  94.     have them run, and do work on these compressed files also.

  96.     PC Config, as its name implies, will allow you to configure PC
  97.     Tools. This can be run from a prompt, or you can select 'Startup
  98.     Programs' from the Configuration menu of the Desktop. This allows
  99.     you to set which, if any, of PC Tools you want to run at startup.
  100.     You can always have the Desktop come up. You may want: the
  101.     accessories, screen blanker, RAMBoost, Anti-Virus, Commute,
  102.     PC-Cache, Task Switcher, Mirror, or Fax driver. Any of these are
  103.     selectable, and many are further configurable. For example selecting
  104.     PC-Cache will pop up a menu asking how much memory to use and so on.

  106.     Have you ever wondered where a file is on your hard disk? Use File
  107.     Map to physically locate the file. Or maybe you would like to see a
  108.     map of your disk or memory. These are also included, as is memory
  109.     information.

  111.     I have run the gambit of utility programs. The two top contenders
  112.     are PC Tools and Norton. Both are good products, but dollar for
  113.     dollar you are getting more with PC Tools. Central Point has come up
  114.     with a few buggy versions of late, but I think they have stabilized.
  115.     Almost all programs will come out with a bug or two, no matter how
  116.     much testing they undergo. You cannot test a program for every
  117.     configuration out there. If you did, nothing would get to market.

  119.     I have stated in an earlier issue that the price had turned me off
  120.     another product. With this PC Tools, however, you are getting an
  121.     improved Backup program, as you are also getting RAMBoost (which
  122.     does an excellent job), screen blanking and more. This is one
  123.     product that does deserve a look. If you need utilities and more,
  124.     this is the Swiss Army Knife of computer software. About the only
  125.     thing not it here is the kitchen sink. Maybe in the next release!! I
  126.     would just like to see these programs get smaller, which I know is
  127.     wishful thinking. The size of many of these programs scares away
  128.     prospective buyers.

  130.     This program is DOS-based ONLY. Yes, it will install a group, and
  131.     will allow parts of itself to run from Windows, but it will do it
  132.     full-screen.  The Windows version is in beta, as of mid-November,
  133.     and may be released by the time you read this article.
